The answer in one phrase: tasting freely.
Margaux concentrates the highest density of 1855 Grands Crus Classés in the Médoc. Hard to leave without trying several wines. With a dedicated driver, you don't have to ration your glass or sacrifice a designated driver in the group.
But there are other concrete reasons:
Quick comparison of transport modes:
| Mode | Tasting freedom | Schedule flexibility | Comfort | Indicative price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private chauffeur (VTC) | Total | Total | Excellent | €70-440 (per package) |
| Taxi | Limited (uncertain wait) | Low | Adequate | Variable, meter-based |
| Rental car | None (designated driver) | Good | Average | €50-80 + fuel |
| Carpooling | None | Very low | Variable | €10-20 |
| Group shuttle | None | None | Adequate | €40-70 per person |
Chauffeur service becomes essential the moment you want to truly enjoy the appellation, not just drive through it.
The Margaux appellation isn't limited to the village of Margaux alone. It spans five communes: Margaux-Cantenac, Soussans, Arsac, Labarde and part of Cantenac. Result: the châteaux are scattered across approximately 1,500 hectares, which makes a chauffeur even more justified to move from one to the next without losing time.
That's the absolute particularity of Margaux: the appellation has 21 Grands Crus Classés in 1855, including only one Premier Grand Cru Classé—Château Margaux. It's also the only Médoc appellation that bears the name of its First Growth.
The châteaux not to miss:
What sets Margaux apart from the other Médoc appellations is the exceptional depth of its gravels. The clay-gravel soil, set on a limestone subsoil, drains water perfectly and forces roots to dive deep. The result in the glass: wines of characteristic finesse and elegance, with floral aromas, a silky texture and ageing potential that can exceed 40 years for the best vintages.
Cabernet Sauvignon dominates the blend (about 60%), complemented by Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
Fixed prices, guaranteed at booking. No meter, no peak-hour or holiday surcharge. Our reference grid for the Médoc, identical to that of our Bordeaux Chauffeur ↔ Médoc page.

Single transfer is suitable if you've already booked your day on site. To visit several châteaux in one day, on-call hire (below) is almost always more coherent.
Your chauffeur stays with you for the agreed duration, takes you from one château to the next, waits during tastings, drops you at the restaurant and resumes service in the early afternoon. Minimum 4 hours. Same rates for all Médoc appellations.

The trip mostly uses the D2, the Route des Châteaux, which runs along the Médoc vineyards. In itself, that's already a spectacle. Your chauffeur can stop for photos along the way if you wish.
Travelling as a group? We have vans for up to 7 or 8 passengers. Contact us for a group quote.
The Margaux appellation lends itself perfectly to combinations with other left-bank terroirs.
The D2 connects Margaux to Pauillac in about twenty minutes. By leaving early (8:30am), it's possible to visit 2 châteaux in Margaux in the morning and 2 châteaux in Pauillac in the afternoon (Château Mouton Rothschild, Château Lynch-Bages). A dense day, but feasible with a chauffeur who handles the logistics.
Saint-Julien is 25 km north of Margaux. A half-day itinerary can combine a visit to Margaux (morning) and a tasting in Saint-Julien (early afternoon) before returning to Bordeaux.
To go further into the Médoc, also discover our multi-appellation Médoc chauffeur circuits: Pauillac, Saint-Estèphe, Moulis, Listrac in a single day.
And if you want to prepare your visit in advance, our complete guide to the Médoc Wine Route gives you all the keys: appellation history, château map, practical tips.
A single transfer (one way) costs from €70 in eco (€77 in Mercedes E-Class, €87 in van, €102 in Mercedes V-Class van) depending on category. For a half-day circuit with waiting during visits, count €220 in eco (€260 sedan, €280 van) for on-call hire 4h. The full day (7-8h, 4-5 châteaux) is from €440 in eco. Rates are fixed and communicated before booking.
No. Cellar tours at Château Margaux are by appointment only, Monday to Friday. The château is closed weekends, public holidays, in August and during harvest. Tasting of the Grand Vin is reserved for professionals. However, the plane tree avenue and neoclassical façade are accessible from the road, and the château museum is open to visitors during opening hours.
In a full day (7-8h), it's realistic to visit 3 to 4 châteaux with tastings and lunch included. Some groups manage 5, but it's intense. In a half-day, 2 to 3 châteaux is the comfortable rhythm. It all depends on the duration of the booked visits (between 1h and 2h per estate generally).
Yes, that's precisely the advantage of chauffeur service over a taxi. The driver remains available throughout your circuit. He waits on site or nearby during your visits and tastings, with no meter running. Waiting time is included in the rate of the chosen package.
The Margaux appellation is an AOC (controlled designation of origin) that brings together 67 châteaux and estates spread over 5 communes and approximately 1,500 hectares. Château Margaux is one of these estates, the most prestigious: the only Premier Grand Cru Classé in the appellation. In other words, all wines produced in the appellation are called "Margaux", but only Château Margaux can be called "Château Margaux".
Technically possible, but not recommended. Saint-Émilion is on the right bank of the Garonne, about 1h15 from Margaux. Combining both in one day leaves very little time for each destination. Better to dedicate one day to Margaux (left bank) and another to Saint-Émilion (right bank). We offer dedicated circuits for each destination.
April to June: ideal. Châteaux are open, vines start budding, no summer crowds yet.
July-August: peak tourist season. Beware, Château Margaux is closed in August. Book visits well in advance.
September-October: harvests (generally mid-September) animate the appellation. Unique atmosphere, but some châteaux close during the harvest. Check before booking.
November to March: reduced opening hours, calmer atmosphere. Perfect for enthusiasts wanting an intimate visit.
Contact us directly with the number of people, desired date and your visit programme (if you've already booked the châteaux). We offer vans up to 7-8 passengers and can coordinate multiple vehicles for larger groups. A personalised quote is sent within 2h. Book your group chauffeur here.
Continue in the Médoc: Pauillac and its 3 First Growths (Lafite, Latour, Mouton), Saint-Estèphe and the extravagance of Cos d'Estournel, or Moulis-en-Médoc and the confidential Chasse-Spleen.
